Servicing Machines

I am happy to service your lovely old machine, but there are now fairly strict conditions, as I am no longer willing to risk any more damage to my back, and, by gum, these are heavy

So, I will make an appointment for you - please be prompt or call to let me know if you can't make it for any reason. I will take a card number - if you don't show up without an explanation (emergencies are always fine) I will charge a basic £20

You need to bring your machine to my little summerhouse workshop, and put it on the table for me to work on.
No couriers, carriers, "friends passing" please - local only, see my address below..
I will normally ask you to return to collect it after a maximum of 48 hours - I am very limited for space and cannot allow machines to linger, however nice they find the atmosphere here...
There will be a storage charge if the machine is not collected promptly.

There are various levels of service - if I know you and like you, and you have a minor problem I may be willing to do a while-you-wait troubleshoot. This will be priced according to how much is needed and how good a mood I'm in. The minimum charge is £5 to cover oil and stitch-testing and gentle muttering-under-the breath. If I can't fix it right away we will discuss the next steps.

Unless I love you, there's no point in bringing your White Plastic Wonder for a full service - I can't do anything honest with these...
And if it has a computer, I will send you elsewhere...

Then there's a Service Proper - for this I clean, oil, adjust, replace parts as required, remove 40 years of fluff, stitch-test, and make sure you have everything all ship-shaped and ready to roll...
Prices for this start at £35 for hand-cranked machines or treadle heads, a little more if they are very dirty, plus parts.
I find they tend not to need much in the way of extra parts, and I will, of course, discuss any additional expenses with you before doing the work...

Then there's complete treadles - local machines only, of course, and I prefer to make house calls for these. From £65 plus parts. If it needs a belt I charge for this but fitting is included
Treadle service includes adjustment and greasing for the base, of course

Electric machine prices start provisionally at £45, to include basic wiring checks, plus all the above and with the same terms...
PAT testing will be an additional (and compulsory) £5 charge for this. All old-style mains plugs (without shielded pins) have to be replaced in either case; cost is an extra £2

Then there's Restoration - yes, it was your mother's machine, so why didn't you keep it somewhere warm and dry?
I have had a couple of machines in lately that were so poor that, had I been given them, I would not have thought of repairing anything so grubby and dismaying..
I will consider such machines, but you must send good images before making an appointment, and be prepared to spend at least £60 - £100 on the beastie. Any wood/case repairs are decidedly extra..
